Sitting in the hospital the day he was born the weight of joy and responsibility bore down as if the morning sun arose 1000 times at once. No inkling of the challenge that actually lay ahead in time but certainty that all was different from the moment before. Sitting beside sharing the precious moments were trinket gifts, a wagon, a bear, and more. From a calm desperation of loneliness, the stark reality that there was a new best friend in my life, and you don’t know him, for the rest of my life. The words poured into scribbles quickly on a zine back. I heard him smile. The musical progressions, played longingly on guitar, had been in the repertoire but pared with the thoughts quickly it became the song. Two weeks later, with the guitars tracked, vocals sung and percussion composed, I took the guitar upstairs and proclaimed I have a new song. Sitting, rocking and holding him, I played for her New Best Friend and she cried with all the emotion I intended to convey.
